Hey! Microsoft debuted two new phones earlier this year! Remember that? Okay, so there’s a fair chance that Microsoft actually moved fewer Kin One / Two handsets than Fusion Garage did JooJoo tablets, but we’re pretty confident that a few of you fell …

Official Twitter for Android app goes live, will go open source
Posted on 30. Apr, 2010 by IBM.
Twitter had committed to rolling its own client for Android not long ago — and like clockwork, here it is. Looks like the OS integration goes pretty deep, too, with support for Éclair’s Quick Contact bar and tweeting straight from the Gallery app; you’ve also got a timeline widget for your home screen, and you can even see your friends’ latest tweets from your contact list and the Google Talk app. It sounds like Twitter worked pretty closely with Google to make this happen, contributing the code to Android’s trunk for open sourcing in the near future — and developers will even have access to a set of standard Twitter APIs for their own applications. The only downside appears to be that you need Android 2.1 to use it, but that’s just an excuse to run out and upgrade to a sweet new phone, right?

While RIM’s WES 2010 keynote is still ongoing, the company’s YouTube channel has kindly released the first teaser video for the incoming BlackBerry 6 operating system. Twitter for BlackBerry goes to public beta
Posted on 08. Apr, 2010 by IBM.
After a couple months of testing, RIM’s official Twitter client for BlackBerry has just moved from a private, invite-only affair to a free public beta, adding a whole bunch of features in the process. The app’s now got some comprehensive notification support for DMs, replies, and mentions, the ability to create and manage lists, on-device profile editing, magnified avatar viewing, and improved performance — features that might stand a shot at catapulting the app toward the upper end of the Twitter echelon on the platform. RIM’s being clear about the fact that this is still a beta we’re dealing with here, but with public availability, we’re at least a baby step closer to a final product.

Can’t wait for Windows Phone 7 Series, but can’t hack the emulator, either? Don’t lose hope, Windows junkies — you can still bring some semblance of WP7S order into your life with this Metro UI-inspired desktop HUD. Based on the open-source desktop customization platform Rainmeter, the “Omnimo UI” will overlay your desktop with a minimalist, tiled interface not unlike the one you’ve been drooling over for weeks, with live hooks into many useful services (including Gmail, iTunes, Steam, Twitter and SpeedFan) as well as the usual widgets and a host of program shortcuts. The best news of all? It’s available now for all versions of Windows since XP, completely free of charge; simply follow the source links or flit over to Lifehacker, where good folks will teach you how it’s done.

Niko, the N900-powered Lego robot, looks poised to take over Twitter (video)
Posted on 19. Mar, 2010 by IBM.
While we’ve seen no shortage of smartphone-powered robots in the past, the Nokia camp has been sadly under-represented. But, there’s a new one coming to balance things out, a machine called Niko that has Lego Mindstorm NXT 2.0 components for a body and an N900 for a brain. The bot has been under construction for a few weeks but it has just made its YouTube debut with the short video posted after the break, showing it roving around and taking a photo whenever it bumps into something. When all systems are go and the machine is set free Niko will be posting messages and pictures to Twitter describing its every move in thrilling detail. We can’t wait for it to start picking fights with @CourtneyLoveUK.

Navigon keeps MobileNavigator iPhone app fresh with 3D terrain views, Facebook / Twitter integration
Posted on 09. Feb, 2010 by IBM.
Hey, software engineers of all shapes and sizes — are you keeping an eye on this? Navigon is releasing yet another significant update for its continually improving MobileNavigator iPhone GPS app, and at this point, we reckon these guys and gals should get some sort of medal for pursuing innovation on an existing product rather than leaping to “the next best thing.” The latest refresh adds in three primary features: 3D terrain views, a 3D panorama view ($9.99 extra) and in-app connectivity with Facebook and Twitter. As you’d expect, the latter enables users to broadcast current position, destination and ETA to social media outlets, which should make existing Foursquare addicts overwhelmed with joy. Version 1.5.0 also throws in MyRoutes, which is said to analyze your driving habits, patterns, location and time / day in order to provide “up to three routes clearly displayed in-map with ETA, distance and driving times for each.” Best of all? It’s just $69.99 ($20 less than normal) until February 15th, while the real-time traffic add-on is reduced $5 to $19.99 for the same duration.

Microsoft’s Twitter chatter suggests Danger is up to something — Pink drawing near?
Posted on 20. Jan, 2010 by IBM.
The other day, we happened to catch a tag on a tweet reading “from Danger.” No biggie, really — Sidekicks have had Twitter integration for a while now. Here’s the thing, though: tweeting from a Sidekick plugs a “from Sidekick” on the end, not Danger — and what’s more, the Danger text links to Microsoft’s home page rather than Sidekick’s. It’s starting to get juicy, right? Anyhow, these “from Danger” tweets have really picked up across dozens of accounts since December or so, to the point where we’ve got a constant cacophony of ‘em today — possibly a sign that these guys have a product in the works that’s nearing completion.
Danger… new product… Microsoft… ah, that’s right, Pink! We haven’t had any fresh intel on the alleged lovechild of Redmond’s acquisition in some time — it could be dead, for all we know — but there’s definitely something going on inside Microsoft’s labs that involves Danger’s legacy tech and headcount. Whatever it is, they’ve got a predisposition for the hashtag “#tmdp” (it used to be #tmd and changed at some point) — we’ve no idea what it stands for, but we’re curious to get your opinions. Anyhow, is this what we’re going to see next month at MWC? Is WinMo 7 going to take a back seat yet again? Will it be a one-two punch where they reveal a whole slew of Danger and WinMo stuff at once? Heck, are they the same frigging product? Who knows, but hopefully we’ll have it all sorted out within a few weeks’ time.
